Summary Supports various laboratory departments and customers by performing tasks such as clerical duties, clarifying pre-analytical test requirements, order entry, specimen collections, processing samples, specimen transport distribution, supply inventory, and other non-technical support. Prepares and packages specimens/slides for transport according to shipping requirements. Performs waived testing under general supervision.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Ability to read, understand, and speak basic English.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills, including the use of email.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills.
  • Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
  • Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight.
  • Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
  • Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift.
  • Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.

Responsibilities

  • Orders, receives, and triages incoming specimens/slides and evaluates specimen integrity.
  • Verifies that specimens/slides are labeled according to laboratory policy and all paperwork is correct.
  • Performs laboratory information system functions associated with these processes.
  • Prepares specimens/slides and completes laboratory information system functions and documentation for send out to reference laboratory.
  • Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner.
  • Performs waived testing as assigned.
  • Addresses client questions and problems promptly, accurately, and in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Notifies collection site when errors or problems are found to obtain the correct information.
  • Assists with unpacking supplies upon receipt and placing them in the appropriate storage areas/temperatures.
