This role involves performing specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients, including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples. The tech will also order laboratory tests in the laboratory information system, process and file requisitions, answer telephones, perform general clerical duties, and provide customer service. The position requires adherence to all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 6+ months of phlebotomy experience

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples.
  • Order laboratory test in the laboratory information system.
  • Processes, files requisitions.
  • Answering telephone.
  • General clerical duties and customer service.
  • Follows all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Documents and submits required information and data in a timely fashion.
  • Clearly and accurately documents designated processes, policies, products, service offerings, etc.
  • Ensures that documentation is tailored to expected readers / users.
  • Uses correct terminology.
  • Conforms to required style and format.
  • Collection of chain of custody specimens for drug analysis and other drug collection protocols.
  • Uses correct Chain-of-Custody form.
  • Correctly identifies donor.
  • Correctly documents all entries on Chain-of-Custody form.
  • Ensures that specimen type is suitable for the requested test.
  • Keeps samples at the appropriate storage temperature for transporting.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary collections.
  • Correctly identifies patient using two identifiers.
  • Collects the proper tubes for each specimen, in the proper sequence.
  • Receive and accession specimens into laboratory/hospital computer system.
  • Correctly documents the receipt of each specimen in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Answers phone calls for test results, specimen requirements and general information using the lab computer and other resources.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs routine clerical duties as needed.
  • Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs.
  • For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age- specific customer service skills.
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
