About The Position

UnityPoint-St Luke's Hospital is seeking a full-time laboratory professional to interface the laboratory with its Reference Laboratory and Hospital Customers. The role involves performing complex reference laboratory patient registrations and hospital laboratory outpatient registrations in both the Hospital Information System and the Laboratory Information System. Responsibilities include determining Reference Laboratory billing, ordering tests, validating medical necessity, processing specimens, and communicating with various stakeholders. The position requires working day shifts from 3am to 1:30pm, with rotating weekends and holidays. A sign-on bonus of $1,500 is offered to qualified applicants.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • 1 year work experience.
  • Proficiency with computer data entry functions.
  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking).
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Customer/patient focused.
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment.

  • OSHA Bio-Hazard Certification (if designated to drive).

Responsibilities

  • Provides specimen processing for reference laboratory outreach patient testing and initiates inpatient processing.
  • Assists lab outpatients in the collection process of specimens for testing.
  • Monitors patients during complex lab test procedures and communicates with patients and their families.
  • Uses lab catalogs to ensure correct tests are ordered.
  • Initiates and resolves patient specimen resolution processes.
  • Completes daily quality audits of the patient lab record.
  • Performs complex patient registrations in both Hospital and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Investigates and confirms insurance eligibility to prevent errors.
  • Obtains and verifies orders from physicians and other care providers.
  • Researches National and Local Coverage Determinations for medical necessity.
  • Investigates denials related to insurance and medical necessity.
  • Handles and distributes specimens to work areas and performs specimen processing.
  • Performs various lab business office functions within regulatory guidelines.
  • Orders and maintains office supply inventory for lab departments.
  • Collects and processes specimens by performing phlebotomy collection.
  • Communicates critical information and provides clerical support for result reporting.
  • Trains new lab registration staff and participates in weekend and holiday support.
