About The Position

UnityPoint-St Luke's Hospital is seeking a full-time laboratory interface specialist to work the day shift from 3am to 1:30pm, with four 10-hour shifts rotating on weekends and holidays. The role involves interfacing the laboratory with its Reference Laboratory and Hospital Customers by performing complex patient registrations and managing laboratory orders. The specialist will ensure the integrity of reference lab outreach shipments, process specimens, and communicate with various stakeholders including providers and patients. A $1,500 sign-on bonus is available for qualified applicants.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • 1 year of work experience.
  • Proficiency with computer data entry functions.
  • Valid driver's license for work-related driving.
  • Fluent in English with strong communication skills.
  • Multicultural sensitivity and customer/patient focus.
  • Critical thinking skills and independent judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of lab CPT codes and diagnosis codes.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specimen processing for reference laboratory outreach patient testing and initiates inpatient processing.
  • Assists lab outpatients in the collection process of specimens for testing.
  • Monitors patients during complex lab test procedures and communicates test results to providers and patients.
  • Performs complex reference laboratory patient registrations in both Hospital and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Investigates and confirms insurance eligibility to prevent errors and delays.
  • Obtains and verifies orders from physicians and care providers.
  • Processes and verifies specimen integrity and handles distribution to lab departments.
  • Performs manual charge entry and supports pathologists with various requests.
  • Communicates critical information and educates lab customers on processes.
  • Trains new lab registration staff and participates in weekend and holiday call support.
