The Lab Support Specialist is primarily responsible for the processing of specimens and data entry to ensure the integrity of specimens and to expedite the completion of tests ordered. This role involves receiving various specimens and blood/tissue products, assessing their integrity, verifying labeling and documentation, and accurately processing data entry of orders to ensure proper patient billing. Key duties include checking incoming samples and requisitions, clarifying unclear test orders with patient care providers, and ordering/verifying tests within the Laboratory Information Systems. The specialist is also responsible for labeling samples, preparing and processing specimens for testing/grossing according to lab procedures, following proper storage requirements, and delivering specimens to appropriate work areas. Additionally, the role requires processing specimens for reference laboratory testing, ordering add-ons, and stocking supplies. The specialist will engage in customer service behaviors, interfacing with internal and external customers to provide appropriate information, including access to patient test results. Other tasks include assisting with loading patient specimens on designated instrumentation, performing Point of Care (POC) testing, clocking in requisitions, and triaging specimens by priority. The position emphasizes identifying ways to improve work processes, maintaining knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines, and staying abreast of the latest developments in the laboratory area through continuous learning.
