About the position

The Lab Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that laboratory services are provided in accordance with Ohio County Healthcare's policies and procedures, as well as its Purpose, Vision, and Values. The role emphasizes the importance of delivering outstanding care consistently, regardless of the encounter. The Lab Supervisor must maintain a flexible schedule and present a neat, clean, and professional appearance while exhibiting positive human relations. Accountability is a key aspect of this position, as the supervisor will oversee laboratory personnel and ensure compliance with organizational and laboratory policies. In this role, the Lab Supervisor will package, ship, and communicate Covid-19 results from reference laboratories, including scanning results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). The supervisor will also perform generalist tech duties, rotating through various departments such as Phlebotomy, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Urinalysis, Serology, and Microbiology, ensuring that testing equipment and systems are monitored for acceptable analytical performance. The Lab Supervisor will provide direction to both certified and non-certified staff performing waived and non-waived testing, ensuring that corrective actions are taken before patient test results are reported. Competency of testing personnel will be a priority, with the supervisor responsible for overseeing specimen processing, test performance, reporting of results, and instrument maintenance and calibration at defined intervals. The supervisor will also conduct proficiency testing and review results of proficiency testing surveys, adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all quality control activities. In addition to these responsibilities, the Lab Supervisor will maintain the laboratory employee schedule, assist Phlebotomy staff as needed, and ensure compliance with safety and cleanliness standards in the laboratory environment. The role may require occasional travel to other OCH labs and involves data entry of specimens into the hospital computer system. The job description is intended to provide a general overview of the essential functions of the position, and additional duties may be assigned by the Lab Manager as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure laboratory services are provided in accordance with policies and procedures.

  • Perform generalist tech duties across various departments as deemed competent.
  • Provide direction for non-certified and certified staff performing waived and non-waived testing.
  • Ensure corrective actions are taken prior to reporting patient test results.
  • Oversee competency of testing personnel responsible for specimen processing and test performance.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, and testing.
  • Perform proficiency testing and review results of proficiency testing surveys.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
  • Maintain the laboratory employee schedule and assist Phlebotomy staff as needed.
  • Ensure a safe and clean work environment in the laboratory.
  • Travel off-site to other OCH labs as required.
  • Responsible for data entry of specimens into the hospital computer system.

Requirements

  • 2 or 4 year degree in a relevant field.
  • Preferred 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • MT certification preferred.
  • Certification in DOT/Saliva alcohol collections preferred.
  • Computer skills are required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a supervisory role within a laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
