Dr Wharam's Team (Division of General Internal Medicine) We are a health policy analytics research team at Duke University. We evaluate natural experiments in health policy, benefit design/out‑of‑pocket costs, and health insurance using large administrative claims. Our projects span methods such as difference‑in‑differences, panel data models / controlled interrupted time series/ segmented regression, and survival analysis. We use robust data engineering processes to create analyzable cohorts from raw claims. The Programmer/ Analyst will serve as a SAS‑forward Programmer/Analyst (Stata helpful) who can turn raw claims into analytic datasets and contribute to study design, analysis, and manuscripts in collaboration with faculty investigators, a Research Scientist, project managers, and external partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong SAS programming skills (Stata experience also beneficial)
  • Master's degree level familiarity with statistical analysis, preferably in large health insurance claims datasets
  • Familiarity with the research process, from data acquisition and cleaning to statistical analysis to manuscript preparation
  • Capable of conducting high-quality SAS programming

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain SAS workflows that import, clean, and organize claims data; run quality checks; and keep clear documentation (Base/Macro/SQL; PROC FREQ/MEANS/SUMMARY; formats). Construct analytic cohorts from Medicaid, Medicare, or commercial claims; map ICD‑10‑CM, CPT/HCPCS, DRG, NDC, revenue codes; derive episodes and utilization/cost measures.
  • Implement study designs and analytic approaches (e.g., DiD, interrupted time series, matching/weighting, panel/fixed effects); run analyses in SAS and, where useful, Stata.
  • Serves as contributing author for protocols, reports, and manuscripts.
