About The Position

Performs various laboratory functions that include full and contract registration, phlebotomy, specimen processing and clerical duties that ensure proper registration, billing, collection, accessioning and preparation of laboratory specimen. Loads specimens onto Automated Line and trouble shoots when alarms are active. Accepts and prioritizes specimens that arrive at specimen drop off. Answers incoming telephone calls and practices excellent customer service. Works the follow up lists for the department and maintains logs as necessary. Prepares specimens for reference labs and works send out bench when assigned. May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed, based on the department needs and within the scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external laboratory customers.
  • Requires knowledge of computer data entry.
  • Must possess good telephone communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow.
  • Requires good decision-making skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Less than one year healthcare environment experience
  • Age of Patients Served: All Age Groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program.
  • Phlebotomy with specific experience in hospital and geriatric environment.
  • Specimen processing.
  • Experience using a Laboratory Information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.
  • Registration and disposition of patients.
