About The Position

The position requires advanced technical knowledge in the laboratory planning and programming of various sized pharmaceutical, academic research, biotech, or other emerging technical facilities. The role involves providing technical planning expertise and leadership for laboratory facilities, including programming, design, fit-out planning, equipment planning, MEP systems integration planning, casework specification, and construction administration. The individual will lead user group meetings to collect program needs for laboratory specifications, develop a comprehensive understanding of clients' program requirements, and lead the design development and modification of laboratory planning concepts. Responsibilities also include generating project scope, plans, and services, translating planning concepts for clients and project teams, establishing project budgets and schedules, and communicating planning concepts through reports and architectural drawings. The role requires managing lab equipment planning, applying QA/QC methods, developing client relationships, participating in marketing opportunities, and mentoring less experienced staff. The individual will also be involved in industry associations and sustainable work practices.

Requirements

  • 7+ years relevant Science and Technology Experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Licensure preferred.
  • 5+ years progressive experience in programming and planning laboratory types.
  • LEED GA within 6 months of hire.
  • Professional Accreditation in Living Design (e.g., LEED AP, BREEAM AP).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in design of traditional laboratories, production facilities, computational research, and higher education science teaching spaces.
  • Strong hand and advanced CAD drafting skills.
  • Knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for laboratory design.
  • Experience with sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced technical knowledge in laboratory planning and programming.
  • Leads user group meetings to collect program needs for laboratory specifications.
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of clients' program requirements.
  • Leads design development and modification of laboratory planning concepts.
  • Generates project scope, plan, and services including overall concepts and detailed layouts.
  • Translates planning concepts into comprehensible terms for clients and project teams.
  • Establishes overall project budgets and milestone schedules.
  • Communicates planning concepts through graphic and written reports.
  • Develops architectural drawings and specifications for project documentation.
  • Surveys and manages client's lab equipment and integrates it into lab layouts.
  • Anticipates and develops solutions to technical and design problems.
  • Understands utility requirements and coordinates with engineering teams.
  • Manages the lab equipment planning process and tracking.
  • Applies proper QA/QC methods throughout the project.
  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with clients.
  • Participates in marketing and business development opportunities.
  • Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
  • Mentors and directs the work of less experienced staff.
  • Participates in firm-wide Science and Technology practice.
  • Leads the development of standard materials for the Science and Technology Group.
  • Assures document standards are met and archives documents appropriately.
  • Sets up project team software parameters and manages standards.
  • Prepares 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings.
  • Actively participates in industry associations.
  • Fosters a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
  • Acquires strong CEL skills and a deep understanding of laboratory systems.
