Organization and Position Overview: Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact. In the Project Delivery Phase and Startup Phase of the project (2025 to 2028), roles will be fluid and dynamic as we endeavor to support the project delivery, build a new organization, develop and implement the necessary systems and business processes required to support GMP operations. This will require significant collaboration, creativity and resilience as the Lilly Medicine Foundry goes from design, to start-up, and to steady-state operations. Job Summary: The Lab Operations Manager at Eli Lilly and Company is responsible for overseeing the daily operational activities of one or more laboratory facilities, ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant execution of research and development efforts. This role focuses on streamlining workflows, managing vendors, supporting scientific teams, and ensuring inspection readiness through strong Quality Assurance practices. The position works closely with Quality, EHS, Facility, IT, and Scientific teams to maintain GLP/GMP standards, meet internal quality requirements, and ensure compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field)
  • 5-7 years’ experience in laboratory operations, including 2-3 years in a leadership or supervisory role in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting
  • Knowledge of laboratory best practices, GLP/GMP regulations, and EHS standards
  • Strong understanding of lab instrumentation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Proven skills in budget, resource, and project management
  • Excellent leadership, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily laboratory operations, including oversight of equipment maintenance, coordination with vendors, inventory management, and facility and utilities administration.
  • Develop and implement SOPs for laboratory processes to ensure adherence to regulatory and internal standards
  • Provide Quality oversight, ensuring compliance with GDP, data integrity (ALCOA+), and change management
  • Coordinate equipment repairs, calibrations, and preventative maintenance
  • Enforce safety protocols, conduct safety audits, GEMBA walks, and organize safety training for staff
  • Partner with scientific leads and project managers to support research needs and meet project goals
  • Track expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality and safety
  • Maintain laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and related software for data management
  • Participate in planning and design for new or renovated laboratory spaces
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase laboratory efficiency and effectiveness
  • Lead and mentor laboratory support staff to foster a collaborative and productive environment
