The position involves performing venous and capillary blood draws for laboratory testing from both in-patients and out-patients at the hospital. The role requires demonstrating excellent phlebotomy skills and evaluating specimens to determine their suitability for testing. Additionally, the position includes performing EKG and EEG testing, selecting and assembling equipment for measuring brain and heart activity, and ensuring that critical EKG readings are communicated immediately to the attending physician, House physician, or ED physician. The individual will assist the supervisor in providing technical instructions and training to newly hired personnel regarding techniques, computer system usage, and work organization. Responsibilities also include evaluating specimens and test orders for acceptability, labeling specimens properly, aliquoting samples as required, and distributing them to the appropriate departmental sections. The role requires regular monitoring of inventory supplies, notifying the supervisor for orders, and maintaining a clean storeroom. Furthermore, the individual will prepare specimens for reference labs, obtain results from these labs, and ensure that testing results are delivered to physicians. All activities related to send-out specimens and resolving issues with reference labs are also part of the job.
