About The Position

The position involves performing venous and capillary blood draws for laboratory testing from both in-patients and out-patients at the hospital. The role requires demonstrating excellent phlebotomy skills and evaluating specimens to determine their suitability for testing. Additionally, the position includes performing EKG and EEG testing, selecting and assembling equipment for measuring brain and heart activity, and ensuring that critical EKG readings are communicated immediately to the attending physician, House physician, or ED physician. The individual will assist the supervisor in providing technical instructions and training to newly hired personnel regarding techniques, computer system usage, and work organization. Responsibilities also include evaluating specimens and test orders for acceptability, labeling specimens properly, aliquoting samples as required, and distributing them to the appropriate departmental sections. The role requires regular monitoring of inventory supplies, notifying the supervisor for orders, and maintaining a clean storeroom. Furthermore, the individual will prepare specimens for reference labs, obtain results from these labs, and ensure that testing results are delivered to physicians. All activities related to send-out specimens and resolving issues with reference labs are also part of the job.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Medical Assistant certification required.
  • Health care certification (i.e. Lab Assistant, Phlebotomist) or prior laboratory or healthcare experience desired.
  • EKG/phlebotomy skills required.
  • Previous Phlebotomy/Lab Experience.
  • Degrees from foreign institutions will require credential equivalency evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venous and capillary blood draw for laboratory testing from hospital in- and out-patients.

  • Selects, assembles, checks for proper function and operation of equipment for measurement of brain/heart activity.
  • Ensures that critical EKG readings are read immediately by the attending, House or ED physician.
  • Assists supervisor in providing technical instructions and training of new hired personnel in techniques, computer system usage, and organization of work.
  • Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines; accessions specimens with accuracy.
  • Labels specimens properly, aliquots samples as required, and obtains/distributes to proper departmental section.
  • Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies; monitors inventory of all supplies on a regular basis; notifies supervisor to order supplies as needed; stores supplies received and maintains a clean and orderly storeroom.
  • Prepares specimens for reference labs; obtains results from reference labs as needed and ensures the testing results delivered to physicians.
  • Performs all activities related to send-out specimens; resolves issues with reference labs.
