The Applied Research & Technology team at Collins Aerospace is a global technology & innovation leader that works on cutting -edge, mission-critical projects that push the boundaries of what technology can do. The Collins Aerospace Materials, Process & Engineering Laboratory provides experimental testing services for research, development, new product development, validation and verification, and in-service field issues. The Lab’s test facilities are organized into several specialized labs, including 1) Characterization - materials, chemistry, Metallurgy; 2) Microstructure, metallographic preparation; 3) Material processing; 4) Testing for mechanical, thermal properties; 5) Endurance testing; 6) Nano materials, coatings and composites. The manager will ensure lab-activities and equipment support key deliverables. The team supports and develops advanced materials and manufacturing technologies of interest to all the company’s strategic business units ranging high temperature composites, additive manufacturing, metallic and non-metallic materials, failure analysis, test development, and surface/green technologies.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • 5+ years experience working in an engineering, manufacturing or chemistry lab.
  • Experience in material characterization in at least 2 of the following areas: 1) Metallurgy and metallographic sample preparation and analyses 2) Mechanical and thermal properties 3) Tribology testing for Nano materials, Coatings and Composites 4) Additive Manufacturing of metals and plastics 5) wet chemistry analyses.
  • 3+ years prior experience leading a team of direct reports

  • Degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Materials, Chemical), Chemistry, Business, or technical field(s).
  • Experience with lab testing, microscopy, metallography and chemistry test equipment.
  • Supervisory experience in a union environment.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships across multiple business units.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of onsite bargaining unit Lab technicians and engineers including motivation, training, and coaching.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate vision, direction, goals, and expectations.
  • Perform administrative function associated with hourly bargaining unit employees, including timekeeping, overtime, training, and performance feedback.
  • Interface between internal customers and Laboratory staff.
  • Define work schedule, job assignment, and equipment allocations based on program priority.
  • Establish standards and expectations for work efforts and performance of direct reports.
  • Drive performance metrics: Delivery, Quality, Customer Satisfaction, Financial, and EH&S.
  • Model and promote Environmental Health & Safety policies and goals.
  • Ensure EH&S compliance.
  • Responsible for Calibration and Preventative Maintenance programs.
  • Manage Capital inventory and depreciation, preventative maintenance and timely decommissioning of aging or not in use equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time
