About The Position

Join the UT Southwestern team as a Laboratory Manager within our Anatomic Pathology department. As a lab manager, you will be responsible for the planning, coordination of resources and control of activities concerned within Anatomic Pathology. Our laboratory manager position is an integral part of our pathology team and will help to develop and implement appropriate lab policies and practices in compliance with UT Southwestern policies and state, federal and other regulatory agencies. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science
  • Certification as a Histotechnologist, HTL (ASCP) or Cytotechnologist, CT (ASCP), or as a Medical Technologist (MT, ASCP)
  • Five (5) years of working as a histotechnologist or cytotechnologist
  • Three (3) years of experience of supervisory/managerial experience in Anatomic Pathology
  • Experience managing complex practices (multiple sites with many employees and pathologists)
  • Proven track record of creative thinking and innovation in practice management
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in process improvement
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in people management and staff development (employee morale and turnover, development of staff orientation/training programs, on-the-job development, conflict resolution)

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Business or Public Heath, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Laboratory Director to develop an annual departmental strategic plan that incorporates University of Texas Southwestern-University Hospitals (UTSW-UH) and Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS) goals.
  • Responsible for helping to develop and implement the work plan associated with the strategic goals for Anatomic Pathology services and Reference Testing operations.
  • Assist and coach laboratory managers and supervisors in management of resources and work processes to help improve and enhance.
  • Apply quality, efficiency and access metrics to define project staffing needs.
  • Work with the Director to organize/budget resources for delivery of effective patient care.
  • Review department goals and arrange work to accomplish goals.
  • Develop short range targets as indicators toward reaching goals.
  • Accountable for the laboratory maintaining accreditation with College of American Pathologists (CAP), Centers for Medicare, The Joint Commission (TJC), and Medicaid Services (CMS), licensing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
  • Also ensures laboratory is compliant with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Assist in the reviewing of operational indicators and financial reports to ensure progress toward achieving goals.
  • Ensure compliance with UTSW-UH, CLS and Human Resources policies as well as with outside governmental agencies and regulators.
  • Oversee outreach program organizing/budgeting resources to increase profitability, product and service portfolio.
  • Assess the Anatomic Pathology through various methodologies of collecting information from patient, clients, pathologists and clinicians.
  • Track and respond to complaints.
  • Work towards recovering and ensuring the needs of patients, clients, pathologists and clinicians are met.
  • Appropriately educate patient, clients, pathologists and clinicians on UTSW UH and CLS policies.
  • Bring issues forward to the Director for resolutions based in organizational systems.
  • Plan for acquisition, alignment and engagement of human resources through selection, on-boarding, coaching, appraisal, and development.
  • Seek to create an environment with emphasis on teamwork in accomplishing the mission and goals of the CLS department and UTSW-UH.
  • Participate in continuing professional education, assist clinicians in the appropriate utilization of laboratory services and results, evaluates new tests, methodologies, and instrumentation.
  • Assist in arranging provision of laboratory services for research projects.
  • Assist the Medical Service Plan with billing issues.
  • Liaison with reference lab partner.
  • Coordinate the dual dynamics of having reference lab and CLS employees at sites.
  • Assist with electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory subject matters.
  • Demonstrate continuous performance improvements in targeted areas of responsibility in alignment with the overall annual Hospital performance improvement targets.
  • Meet or exceed financial goals and objectives of the department.
