About The Position

The key responsibilities of the Lab Coordinator supporting Point of Care Testing (POCT), Quality and Compliance: Oversee the day-to-day operations of Point of Care (POC) testing activities outside of the main laboratory. Coordinate work-related tasks to ensure testing is performed within acceptable safety and quality guidelines. Ensure that regulatory and compliance requirements are met. Understand all technical aspects of POC Testing including methodology and instrumentation. Function as expert advisor on POC testing methods and suggest and implement local applications. Facilitation of on-going laboratory compliance with clinical regulatory and accreditation requirements ie CAP, JC Facilitation of the lab’s quality management system (QMS) and quality initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics
  • Completion of Medical Laboratory Scientist program approved or accredited by the NAACLS
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist-MT (pre 2004 certifications only) or Medical Laboratory Scientist-MLS from ASCP Board of Certification (BOC). All individuals who are certified (since January 1, 2004) must maintain ongoing certification as a MLS through completion of the required Competency Maintenance Program (CMP) from the ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) BOC accrediting body
  • All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology. All individuals who are newly ASCP certified after January 1, 2004 or newly AMT certified after January 1, 2006 must maintain ongoing certification
  • 2 years of full-time experience in the clinical laboratory
  • Current driver’s license in the state of Michigan and excellent driving record is required.
  • Driving your own vehicle on a regularly scheduled basis to perform business on behalf of Bronson is required for this position and will require successfully pass of MVR check after an offer of employment has been made but prior to the employee’s start date.
  • Proof of valid auto insurance on that vehicle that will be driven while on duty for Bronson is required. It is the employee’s responsibility to submit auto. insurance renewals before current coverage expires to their supervisor. It is also the employee’s responsibility to update their auto insurance coverage with Bronson if a different vehicle will be driven to perform business on behalf of Bronson.

Responsibilities

  • POC Coordination of the point of care testing activities at all Bronson Healthcare Group locations including hospital entities and ambulatory services.
  • Facilitates regulatory compliance of CAP accreditation standards for moderate complexity POC testing.
  • Functions in role of Technical Consultant satisfying responsibilities delegated by laboratory medical director.
  • Oversees waived testing and facilitates compliance of TJC waived testing standards
  • Collaborates with clinical representatives and educators to ensure training and competency requirements for all staff performing POCT are met
  • Works in conjunction with Purchasing and vendors, assists in maintaining adequate supplies and inventory for section.
  • Assists one-up with work review and consults with pathologists as required.
  • Uses critical thinking to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems
  • Acts as a resource for healthcare providers on matters relating to testing methodology and quality concerns.
  • Performs only tests that they have trained in and demonstrated competency.
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Follows good laboratory practices with reagent stability and storage. Adhere to the laboratory’s chemical and biohazardous safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in Laboratory Quality Program activities with emphasis on assuring clinical compliance with training, safety, laboratory, hospital, and accreditation standards
  • Maintains competencies and certification through approved methods of continuing education.
  • Assists in training preanalytical, analytical (waived, moderate and high complexity) and postanalytical phases of testing, as appropriate to job description.
  • Promotes and develops inter-departmental teamwork throughout the laboratory and hospital.
  • Works with laboratory technical coordinators and one-up to manage workload and staffing levels for optimal patient care.
  • Works in collaboration with all lab sections, pathologists, and other hospital departments to assure quality services are provides to all patients and customers
  • Assumes responsibility and assists with the coordination and management of Bronson Laboratory quality management system (QMS), related systems and processes
  • Facilitate documentation of laboratory non-conforming events.
  • Manages data to promote process improvements and corrective actions
  • Apply and mentor use of process improvement tools
  • Facilitate documentation of quality metrics and indicators, assessments and action plans for continual improvement
  • Facilitates internal PDSA and risk audit process to assess effectiveness of corrective actions
  • Directs activities of laboratory testing within and outside of the laboratory maintain regulatory compliance with CAP, CLIA, FDA, TJC and other standards as applicable
