About The Position

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Position Summary: To assist the MLT faculty by preparing, substituting for and/or supervising MDL laboratory sections: maintain and update laboratory supplies and equipment; help students by tutoring. Ensure the safe practices of medical laboratory procedures.

Requirements

  • MLT/MT/MLS ASCP certification
  • Recent experience as a Medical Lab Technician
  • Knowledge of lab protocol, lab testing preparation such as preparation of media and stable reagents
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in science labs
  • Ability to multitask
  • Good communication skills to include ability to follow written and verbal directions
  • Ability to stand while preparing materials for lab use
  • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Ability to identify and mitigate safe and unsafe laboratory practices

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience in Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory Technology, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of instructional laboratory sections for all MDL courses
  • Prepare non instructional correspondence and assist MDL instructors to include classroom support, proctoring exams, laboratory demonstrations, and tutoring.
  • Prepare media and stable reagents
  • Maintain physical inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Perform or arrange preventative maintenance, repair, and assembly of laboratory instrumentation and equipment
  • Maintain quality control organisms
  • Conduct safety audits and quality assessments to comply with OSHA and the college's chemical and safety program
  • Prepare and maintain chemical hygiene plan for department to satisfy laboratory standards
  • Manage waste removal to include biohazardous waste and sharps disposal
  • Manage student clinical approval process to include applications, health forms, immunizations, drug screens, and CPR documentation
  • Conduct clinical site visits as necessary
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
