The laboratory assistant plays a vital role in patient care by performing essential laboratory testing and specimen management. This position is responsible for specimen collection, storage, preparation for transport, and conducting point of care testing while adhering to regulatory standards. The laboratory assistant must maintain accurate records and ensure patient identification and customer service excellence.

  • Perform specimen collection and ensure proper storage of specimens.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to appropriate locations.
  • Conduct point of care testing and quality testing according to CAP, Joint Commission, and CLIA standards.
  • Review provider orders and maintain knowledge of laboratory standards.
  • Keep accurate records, including quality control and temperature monitoring in laboratory areas.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successful completion of OSF Phlebotomy class within 6 months of hire if not previously completed or if lacking phlebotomy experience.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience or training.
  • Basic proficiency in Electronic Medical Record systems.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft applications.
