About The Position

As the Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the clinical laboratory. This position is responsible for specimen collection, processing, labeling, data entry, inventory management, temperature monitoring, specimen/ order management and maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment. The Laboratory Assistant works under the supervision of licensed laboratory personnel and ensures that all specimens are handled in accordance with established protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma
  • 2 years laboratory experience

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical Laboratory Assistant certification preferred.
  • AS or BS in science (biology, biomedical, etc.) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect patient specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) following proper identification and safety procedures.
  • Label, transport, and process specimens accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and send outs to reference laboratories as required.
  • Manage reference laboratory pending lists, miscellaneous test order management, resolve missing, incomplete or rejected orders.
  • Assist technologists with basic lab procedures (e.g., centrifugation, aliquoting)
  • Maintain accurate records and perform data entry into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Monitor, order and restock laboratory supplies and inventory as needed.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and workspaces according to infection control protocols.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste in compliance with hospital and OSHA guidelines.
  • Answer phones and respond to routine inquiries from clinical staff regarding test orders or specimen status.
  • Support quality control and continuous improvement efforts within the lab (eg. temperature monitoring, refrigeration/ freezer quality control, and other quality control as deemed appropriate).
  • Adhere to all hospital, departmental, and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, HIPAA, CAP, and Joint Commission).
