About The Position

As a key member of the Moon-to-Mars Planetary Autonomous Construction Technology (MMPACT) project, this individual will serve as the Lab Assistant for the additive construction lab. The Lab Assistant shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty, Staff, and Student Handbook.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an earned Associate's degree in a mechanical or technical field or equivalent hours from a regionally accredited institution

  • Willingness to get hands dirty as this job is a very unique blend of desk work and hands-on lab work
  • Strong mechanical systems background
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (people skills)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Understanding of hardware control systems and/or programming
  • PLC programming
  • 3D modeling SolidWorks Solid Edge
  • Minimum of one (1) year of machinist experience
  • Experience with AC/DC motors and circuits

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of additive construction technology, important control variables, and effects of changes to those variables
  • Coordinate subscale printing activities, monitor use of consumables, and restock consumables as required
  • Maintain lab cleanliness, and organization of raw materials
  • Maintain SDS notebook and test log for all lab activities
  • Assist in review and evaluation of all design concepts, presentations, and white papers generated by firms including Space Exploration Architecture (SEArch), the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), and ICON
  • Interface with SEArch, BIG and ICON as required in meetings, design reviews, and on travel
  • Aid in design and development of Lunar habitat and landing pad conceptual models as required
  • Assist in ideation of design concepts and requirements definition as required
  • Support printer toolpath development and coordinate in-house materials testing
  • Lead ACME-2 (subscale 3D concrete printer) upgrade activity including new controller installation and development testing
  • Work with Olympus technical lead to support Tyndall Air Force Base Digital Construction Platform (DCP) effort
  • Travel as required to Austin TX (ICON), Port St. Joe, FL (Tyndall AFB), and various conference locations
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Design Instructor, Division Chair, Assistant Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction, and/or the President

Benefits

  • Hourly Wage Range - $20.09 - $27.38 per hour, based on experience
  • Part-Time position with a maximum of 19 hours per week
