About The Position

The laboratory assistant is responsible for biological (e.g. blood, urine) specimen receipt, identification verification, processing and storage. The laboratory assistant is also responsible for performing a variety of clerical, processing, and other laboratory duties that include maintaining supply inventory, filing, stocking, receiving shipments, and cleaning. The laboratory assistant works with various computer information systems on a daily basis. Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to transfer to other positions within Mayo Clinic. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship; Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of laboratory functions and medical terminology
  • 1-2 years of medical experience preferred
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and adherence to safety requirements for handling chemicals and infectious agents

Nice To Haves

  • Background in science
  • Previous experience with computers and keyboarding
  • Experience with telephone operations and office equipment
