About The Position

Supports CLIA-Moderately Complex Testing Laboratories at various Clinic Laboratories in the Des Moines Metro (including Ankeny, Clive and Pleasant Hill). Responsibilities include performing phlebotomy and laboratory tests such as CBC, urinalysis, and Flu/COVID testing and others. Hours vary by location between 7a- 6p (M-F) possible weekends 7:30a-1p (S-Sun).

Requirements

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within 3 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory experience preferred.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Valid Iowa driver’s license required.
  • Must meet MercyOne’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately identifies patients prior to phlebotomy collection of specimens using two patient identifiers as established by laboratory policy.
  • May perform patient registration as it relates to requested laboratory testing.
  • Independently performs analysis of biological specimens as trained and per laboratory operating procedures.
  • Monitors the collection, transportation, storage, identification and processing of laboratory specimens to ensure specimen integrity prior to testing.
  • Responsible for operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Recognizes deviation from expected results, analyzes and corrects problems according to laboratory policies.
  • Performs quality control per established frequency, monitors results and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.
  • Assists with new instrument or procedure implementation and training.
  • Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records.
  • Follows safe work practices by observing safety and infection control policies and procedures and informing management of any hazards that may exist.
  • Maintains supply inventories.
  • Participates in training new employees.
  • Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
