Position Overview The Lab Assistant IV performs advanced preparatory components of laboratory testing, including specimen handling and processing, while utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR). This role performs select laboratory testing within scope of practice under CLIA ’88 and supports laboratory quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. The Lab Assistant IV models professional behavior consistent with West Cancer Center’s vision and values and plays a key role in supporting accurate and timely diagnostic services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of laboratory experience, including phlebotomy.
  • Expert-level knowledge of specimen requirements, medical terminology, and collection methods for blood, bone marrow, fluids, and tissue.
  • Strong knowledge of standard laboratory methods, procedures, policies, regulations, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including LIS, EMR, and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and quality customer service skills.
  • Effective verbal communication skills with associates, physicians, and outside professionals.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects while maintaining control of workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical portions of laboratory testing within scope of practice under the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
  • Collect blood specimens using fingerstick, venipuncture, and port access methods.
  • Assist with bone marrow collection and/or accessioning.
  • Assist with the collection and accessioning of other fluid and tissue specimens as indicated.
  • Process specimens accurately and document activities using LIS and EMR systems.
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties as required to support laboratory operations.
  • Assist with inventory management, stocking of supplies, and maintenance of laboratory equipment according to established protocols.
  • Follow laboratory quality assurance procedures and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, competency expectations, and policies.
  • Float to satellite laboratory locations as needed.
