About The Position

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Supervisor , the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collecting, receiving and processing blood specimens; receiving and processing specimens for bacterial culture. Duties include: receiving and processing blood samples; centrifugation and loading barcoded specimens onto automated analyzers that are interfaced to the LIS; preparing aliquots and handling of reference lab specimens; performing waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision. Additional duties include clerical and telephone communication in support of the Laboratories functions.

Requirements

  • CA CPT-2 LICENSE and Heartsaver, required
  • Education level necessary to obtain required licensure and certifications.
  • CPI class will be completed within 90 days of hire and every other year thereafter
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to perform all phlebotomy functions including venous, capillary and arterial punctures on adult, pediatric and neonates populations.
  • Ability to adapt to work load demands and remain calm and function efficiently during difficult or emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Please be advised that this location requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire. This ongoing competency is required through resources internal to the facility; outside RQI competency resources are not acceptable for CommonSpirit Health compliance requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in an acute hospital, preferred.
  • Basic laboratory bench practice skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • General typing/computer skills.
