About The Position
The Laboratory Assistant II position within the Laboratory Services at UTMB Health is a critical role that provides essential technical skills necessary for sample processing in the division. This position may also involve performing phlebotomy duties as assigned. The Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for executing a variety of tasks that ensure the efficient operation of laboratory services, including patient registration, blood collection, and specimen management. The role requires a keen attention to detail and the ability to work independently while adhering to established guidelines and protocols. In this role, the Laboratory Assistant will perform essential duties such as determining the acceptability of patient samples, preparing, storing, and transferring samples for testing, and conducting quality control procedures on laboratory equipment. The assistant will also maintain records related to inventory, maintenance, and daily quality control, ensuring that all processes meet the required standards. The ability to apply problem-solving skills and meet urgent patient and provider needs is crucial for success in this position. The Laboratory Assistant may also be involved in training new staff and assessing their competency, as well as communicating important information to team members, management, and medical directors. Flexibility is key, as the assistant may be required to cover different shifts to ensure continuous patient care. Adherence to safety protocols and internal controls is mandatory, and the assistant will perform related duties as required to support the laboratory's operations.
