About The Position

The University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks an experienced laboratory technician/specialist with expertise in investigation of new investigational therapies in small animal (murine) models. The appropriate candidate should have at least an undergraduate or master degree in biology or related fields, with at least 2 to 3 years of laboratory experience. The appropriate candidate must have direct working experience with studies involving small animal (murine) models. Responsibilities include conducting in vivo drug studies in cancer xenograft mouse model (both subcutaneous and orthotopic models), intravenous and intraperitoneal injections of drugs, drawing blood for analytical studies, experience with necropsy and tissue sampling, and sample preparation/analysis in downstream assays such as immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, Western blot, qPCR, and RNAseq. Working experience with other species (rats and dogs) and writing and managing animal care protocols for research beneficial but not required. Other experiences related to understand the activity of cancer drugs beneficial. This includes investigating drug effect on cells in tissue culture as well as a familiarity in studying mechanism of action of drugs and/or biologics in in vitro models of cancer. Candidates with expertise using more sophisticated molecular techniques like CRISPR, gene expression studies, confocal microscopy, and other molecular assays are highly encouraged to apply, though lack experience with these techniques is not exclusionary. The candidate will be fully integrated into a well-funded (R01, American Cancer Society Research support, major funding through the Translational Orphan Blood Cancer Research Initiative) world-class laboratory with over 30 years of experience conducting state-of-the-art research and drug discovery and development focused on blood cancers. Successful candidates must have effective communication skills as evidenced by favorable team interactions. Professional development and career advancement opportunities will be strongly supported. The candidate will report directly to Owen A. O'Connor, M.D., Ph.D. in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematologic Oncology.
