Responsible for performing technical and clerical duties within the inpatient pharmacy distribution system. The IV Pharmacy Technician is responsible for sterile compounding using the principles of aseptic technique. Compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are prepared in compliance with USP 797 utilizing laminar airflow workbenches and/or biological safety cabinets. Tasks include medication and supply inventory management, medication preparation, medication distribution to patient care units and automated dispensing cabinets, regulatory compliance and other tasks necessary to support safe medication distribution. Competencies required for Pharmacy Technician Level 1 must be successfully completed within 6 months of start date and at annual evaluations thereafter.

  • Responsible for sterile compounding using aseptic technique.
  • Prepare compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) in compliance with USP 797.
  • Manage medication and supply inventory.
  • Prepare and distribute medications to patient care units and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and support safe medication distribution.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of hospital or community pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Experience with aseptic technique, sterile compounding, and USP 797 requirements preferred.
  • Completion of Military Hospital Core school and/or Field Medical Service school preferred.
  • One year (24 credit hours) of college level study including Algebra, Chemistry, Biology preferred.
  • Successful completion of all competencies required for the Pharmacy Technician Level 1 position.
  • Ability to lift 30+ pounds.
  • Ability to operate calculator, telecommunication equipment, and computer workstation.
  • Successful completion of aseptic technique assessment and other required IV competencies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of compounding sterile products (including hazardous agents).
  • Knowledge of medications including brand and generic names.
  • Maintain baseline math competency; perform necessary calculations to accurately prepare medication doses.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws, rules, and regulatory standards.
  • Foster a customer oriented and hospitable work environment.
  • Demonstrate safety, accuracy, and timeliness when completing work.
  • Ability to triage work appropriately.
