About The Position

Fiber Optic Technicians of all levels are invaluable at installing and repairing the service we provide to our residential and business customers.  This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting networking, and telecommunications systems deployed on GWI’s network. This would include Fiber circuits, POTS, xDSL circuits, digital phones, and all premise equipment provisioned for a customer’s service needs. This position requires a professional, self directed individual who can produce results on his/her own as well as part of a team.  Extensive use of telephone and computer technologies while interacting with the GWI customers. Able to document standards and assist in training new employees when asked. Has a general background in telecommunications that allows them to understand industry practices and ensure that GWI is best serving our customers while preparing to evolve with the industry.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • High School Diploma, or equivalent.
  • FOA CFOT Certification - FOA CFOS/H Preferred.
  • Extensive Indoor Cabling experience.
  • Possess strong computer and phone skills.
  • Knowledge of the Internet and email.
  • Basic knowledge of telephone copper inside homes.
  • Proficient in Windows based applications.
  • Pleasant and professional manner.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Flagger Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, in a Professional and Pleasant manner.
  • Able to speak effectively before groups of Customers or Employees of GWI.
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret common safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Establish appropriate priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Field data collection and entry skills.
  • Handle multiple tasks - Employees must have strong organizational skills.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and/or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to drive 1+ hours to job site
  • Must have the ability to Distinguish colors.
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to type.
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is required to work off a ladder sometimes over 20ft high on telephone pole.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds when needed, frequency differs.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move a 32’ extension ladder (typically 85lbs).
  • Ability to pass and maintain DOT Medical Examination.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch to Consolidated Communications Inc (CCI) Central Offices to diagnose and resolve customer problems.
  • Work cooperatively with CCI to resolve problems on GWI and CCI networks.
  • Use the following equipment for troubleshooting existing copper services: DSL test set with TDR, tone generator and probe, POTS test set, punch down tool, Sidekick, and SunSet test sets.
  • Has a full understanding of the GWI network topology and how our customers are provisioned on it.
  • Able to work cooperatively with other GWI teams and vendors on more complex customer services.
  • Installing, site configuration and troubleshooting of advanced business services, including but not limited to: EVPL, EPL, ELAN, EVLAN, EDIA, NNI, Hosted PBX.
  • Installing new Fiber Optic cable to homes.
  • Fusion Splicing new fiber optic cable at home and terminating at the multiport.
  • Identifying and repairing faulty or damaged drop cable, using an OPM and/or VFL.
  • Testing light levels and repairing any deficiencies found at a home, Service affecting or not.
  • Identifying signal impairments beyond the scope of the installation, to be repaired by L3+ Technicians.
  • Following NECA/FOA 301-2016 and organizational installation standards.
  • Perform flagging duties as required to facilitate Fiber Optic Cable Installation or repair.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for emergency dispatch situations (depends on assigned geography).
  • Use following tools/equipment to perform day to day activities:  stepladder, mechanical drill, cable stripper/crimper, modular jacks/plugs, cabling fish tape, impact tool, wire-wrap/unwrap, staple gun, and other telecommunications-related tools.
