About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Southeast Region as a Wildland Fire Management Supervisor (WFMSup). The Kittitas Fire Unit, along with interagency partners, works collaboratively across jurisdictional boundaries and with engaged communities. We safeguard what we value - manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington's lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations. This position serves several important roles for the agency, providing support for the Wildland Fire Protection Strategy and the Forest Health Strategic Plan for EWA. The position helps meet wildland fire suppression needs and associated activities supporting suppression efforts during the active fire season; the primary function during the active fire season will be serving as an engine leader. Additionally, this position plays a key role in meeting the state's forest health deliverables, primarily in support of the 20-year Forest Health Strategy.

Requirements

  • Experience supervising or leading wildland firefighting personnel.
  • Proven ability in computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Global Positioning Systems.
  • Knowledge of DNR Burn Permit Regulations, Smoke Management, Fire Regulation and Enforcement.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with the public, sometimes under stressful conditions.
  • Must complete and pass IS-700 and ICS-100 courses.
  • Must pass the DNR work capacity test or 'Pack Test' at the arduous level before starting work.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor's or Associate's Degree from an accredited institution in a Fire Science, Natural Resource, or related field.
  • Hold multiple single resource boss qualifications and/or Incident Commander Type 4, Strike Team Leader/Task Force Leader, and Wildland Fire Investigator.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Prescribed Fire Operations, Burn Plan Writing, GIS.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a wildland firefighting engine leader supervising three wildland firefighters.
  • Direct the use, safety, operation, and maintenance of a four-wheel drive wildland fire engine.
  • Conduct hazard risk assessments at single residence and community level.
  • Coordinate and accomplish Wildland Urban Interface mapping.
  • Perform reconnaissance on public lands relating to establishing/location water points, helicopter landing zones, staging areas, base camps.
  • Meet with private forest landowners regarding the cost-share program.
  • Assist in completing required forms and submitting cost share applications to Service Forestry staff.
