About The Position

The mission of 4-H Camp Bristol Hills is to provide youth with a unique, fun outdoor experience under the guidance of positive role models, emphasizing positive social interaction, environmental awareness, and skill building. The Camp Kitchen Assistant’s primary role is to provide assistance in the kitchen during meals. Once the kitchen duties are complete, the Kitchen Assistant will also support counselors in the cabins and with programming throughout camp. Once their kitchen duties are completed after dinner each night, Kitchen Assistants will have the option to go home each night, or to remain at camp as a Counselor-In-Training II volunteer. Kitchen Assistants are required to work an 8-hour day, up to a maximum of 48 hours per week. Those Kitchen Assistants who wish to participate as a CIT II in the evenings must notify the Camp Director of their intent no later than June 1. Duration The temporary summer camp season includes 1.5 weeks of pre-camp that begins on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and at least 3 weeks of residential camp that run from Sunday morning to Friday evening each week. Specific dates of camp are July 5– August 7, 2026. Pending availability, Assistant Camp Counselors could begin work as early as June 1, as programming permits.

Requirements

  • 16 years of age by the first day of working with campers.
  • Experience as a camper or working with children.
  • Ability to lift 20-pound loads.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Camp Director, entire camp staff, campers, and camp families.
  • Incorporates teamwork and flexibility into their daily work style.
  • Ability to work with peers.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer and/or First Aid Responding to Emergencies desired.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Kitchen Staff in responsibility for meal preparation and cleanup, including helping campers to set tables, as well as washing dishes. Additional duties as assigned by the Food Service Director and Food Service Assistant Director.
  • Assists Cabin Counselors in responsibility for leadership and guidance of those campers in daily living, with special attention to: personal hygiene and safety, camper participation in all-camp activities, and meal time behavior and habits.
  • Participates in activities with their groups, making camp fun for their campers, teaching skills, providing encouragement and support.
  • Support Counselors in interpreting the rules, policies, and traditions of the camp to the camper.
  • Ability to be flexible and realize that the needs of campers are foremost.
  • Serve as a positive role model in language, appearance, and behavior.
  • Assume responsibility for the health and welfare of campers in his/her bunk.
  • Be physically able to work in the kitchen, including exposure to food borne allergens, lifting trays, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Be physically able to accompany the campers to any of the camp activities.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, and involvement and empowerment of youth.
  • Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting as well as physical symptoms of camper injury or illness.
  • Have auditory ability to respond appropriately to hazards and any camper concerns.
  • Be able to observe camper behavior in daily camp life, to respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior.
