About the position

The position involves working with students to identify their needs and develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that comply with State and Federal Guidelines. The role requires the development of lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate individualized, whole group, or small group instruction, ensuring access to the general education curriculum. The educator will implement and support students' IEPs, communicate effectively with parents, and create a conducive learning atmosphere. Responsibilities also include planning activities that promote inquiry and social behavior, screening English Language Learners, evaluating student growth, maintaining records, and collaborating with parents and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Identify student needs, make appropriate referrals, and develop Individual Education Plans (IEP) that meet State and Federal Guidelines.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials for individualized, whole group, or small group instruction.
  • Implement and support students' Individual Education Plans, including long-range goals and short-term objectives.
  • Effectively communicate with parents through newsletters, e-mail, notes, phone calls, and individual conferences.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Plan and conduct activities that provide a balanced program of instruction.
  • Foster cooperative social behavior through activities and group projects.
  • Screen and provide instructional supports for English Language Learners.
  • Evaluate student academic and social/emotional growth.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student performance.
  • Confer with parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators to resolve student issues.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide information for IEP meetings and conferences.
  • Establish and maintain communication with standard and special services staff.
  • Discuss student issues with parents in a confidential manner.
  • Assist students with personal needs as required.
  • Promote parent participation in educational activities and IEP meetings.
  • Requisition instructional materials and supplies.
  • Attend meetings called by the Principal and Director/Assistant Director of Special Services.
  • Work cooperatively with parents and the community.
  • Provide input regarding the curriculum to the Principal and Special Education Director.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected activities.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals and evaluate their performance.
  • Establish and enforce classroom behavior rules and procedures.
  • Maintain CPI certification.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the principal or Director/Assistant Director of Special Services.

Requirements

  • Appropriately licensed/certified by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Competence with curriculum, diagnostic instruments, and research-based interventions.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse populations.
  • Competence in the use of technology.
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, listening, and written.
  • Positive attitude and excellent work ethic and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • High level of professionalism and ethics.
