About The Position

Under general supervision of the Animal Control Manager, responsible for the care of shelter animals, maintenance and cleaning of the kennel and performing routine kennel tech work among many other duties. Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret regulations governing animal control department policies

  • Computer skills including basic level of Microsoft Word and Excel and Google Suite
  • Must be able to operate cellular phone, two-way radio, fax machine, copy machine, calculator, computer, printer, and various software
  • Must be willing and able to work various hours and shifts as assigned, including weekends and holidays
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Must have completed within the last three years, or complete within 120 days of employment, a training course in the proper methods and techniques of euthanizing animals.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License “Class C”
  • Previous animal control or related experience preferred
  • MUST BE ABLE TO WORKDAYS, AND EVENINGS.
  • MUST BE ABLE TO WORK SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS, HOLIDAYS AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
  • MUST BE ABLE TO WORK PAST NORMAL ASSIGNED SHIFT.
  • WILL BE SUBJECT TO CALL-BACK.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with animals
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a municipal animal control facility as a Kennel Technician
  • Certification by Texas Department of Health for Euthanasia or ability to obtain within one year of employment

Responsibilities

  • Confine stray and quarantined animals for specified periods in the animal shelter.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs regarding shelter care activities.
  • Operate mobile radio in receiving and communication information.
  • Answer questions regarding the licensing and disposal of animals.
  • Assist with rabies control programs.
  • Write reports and complete various record keeping forms.
  • Provide a safe and sanitary environment for the temporary housing of animals by cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining dog kennels, cat and wildlife rooms, play yards, and adjacent workspaces and outdoor areas, ensuring all are in good working condition and safe for habitation.
  • Animal handling including feeding, exercising, intake and assessment.
  • All tasks associated with euthanasia.
  • Provides inoculations, appropriate preventative care and basic medical treatment to animals in accordance with current shelter policy and procedures.
  • Identifies injuries and illnesses in animals and reports conditions promptly to the supervisor.
  • Assist the public in adoption, redemption and lost and found services in a courteous manner.
  • May assist the Animal Shelter by answering incoming calls, processing fees paid to the animal shelter, and completing paperwork for animal adoptions, city license applications, pet permit applications, microchip registrations, and other related animal dispositions.
  • Daily animal inventory including posting details such as breed, sex, and color of each animal in a database or kennel display cards.
  • Help prepare marketing materials, newsletters, and social posts to promote adoptions and shelter programs.
  • Assist with volunteers or interns by scheduling and recording hours worked, and ensuring safety and compliance with shelter protocols.
  • Participate in public-facing programs and events, including adoption events, training sessions, and community education programs.
  • Expected to participate in cross-training initiatives and may be subject to temporary assignment of alternate duties to ensure seamless operations.
