About The Position

The Keeper Aquarist at the Audubon Aquatic Center (AAC) is responsible for the comprehensive care and management of aquatic life, ensuring high standards of animal welfare and compliance with veterinary protocols. This mid to high-level position involves daily operations, including water quality testing, exhibit maintenance, and collaboration with rehabilitation efforts for aquatic animals. The role emphasizes teamwork, communication, and a commitment to the mission of the Audubon Nature Institute, which focuses on conservation and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of paid experience in a zoological facility or public aquarium.
  • Familiarity with executing quarantine protocols and administering treatments.
  • Understanding of aquatic life support systems and water chemistry.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; degree in zoology, biology, or related field preferred.
  • Proven competency in Microsoft Office programs and mobile communication devices.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate power tools.

Nice To Haves

  • SCUBA certification strongly preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, and horticultural skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high standards of animal care and wellbeing.
  • Conduct daily water quality testing and maintain life support systems.
  • Implement veterinary prescribed quarantine plans and monitor animal health.
  • Maintain and repair exhibit systems and perform building maintenance as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with AAR staff regarding life support and water quality parameters.
  • Develop and evaluate animal enrichment and training programs.
  • Ensure compliance with AZA, USDA, USWFS, and NOAA standards.
  • Maintain accurate records for animal health and behavior monitoring.
  • Assist with tours and represent the Audubon Nature Institute professionally.
