About The Position

The Keeper Aquarist at the Audubon Aquatic Center (AAC) is responsible for the comprehensive care and management of aquatic species, ensuring their health and wellbeing through effective husbandry practices. This mid to high-level position involves maintaining life support systems, conducting water quality tests, and adhering to veterinary protocols for quarantine and rehabilitation efforts. The role requires collaboration with veterinary staff and the Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR) program, as well as compliance with various regulatory standards. The Keeper Aquarist plays a vital role in promoting animal welfare and supporting the mission of the Audubon Nature Institute.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of paid experience in a zoological facility or public aquarium.
  • Familiarity with executing quarantine protocols and administering treatments.
  • Understanding of aquatic life support systems and water chemistry.
  • Experience with animal recordkeeping software, preferably ZIMS.
  • High School diploma and a degree in zoology, biology, or related field preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.

Nice To Haves

  • SCUBA certification strongly preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, and horticultural skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high standards of animal care and wellbeing.
  • Perform upkeep and preventative maintenance of life support systems (LSS).
  • Conduct daily water quality testing and maintain exhibit functionality.
  • Implement veterinary prescribed quarantine plans and monitor animal health.
  • Assist AAR staff with animal procedures and maintain effective communication.
  • Uphold biosecurity protocols for quarantine and rescued animals.
  • Utilize training and enrichment to enhance animal behavior and welfare.
  • Ensure compliance with AZA and USDA standards and guidelines.
  • Monitor and record health and behavior trends of animals.
  • Represent Audubon Nature Institute during tours and public interactions.
