About The Position

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) is dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region, and making this resource available to all. As an educational institution, staff carries out CBMM’s mission, goals and vision, working individually and collaboratively to encourage the public’s access to our collections, programs, and resources. Summary Description The Kayak Instructor will facilitate engaging, on-the-water programming for groups of all ages and abilities. This role is essential in promoting CBMM’s mission of delivering meaningful and accessible experiences to CBMM's communities and constituents. The instructor will be responsible for leading groups of varying backgrounds and ability levels on kayaking excursions that may range from several hours to a full day.

Requirements

  • Must possess ACA (American Canoe Association) Instructor Certification or equivalent.
  • Previous experience and interest in kayaking is required.
  • Functioning effectively in large group settings and high-stress environments.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations effectively and confidently if they arise.
  • Skill in maintaining control and providing appropriate instruction to groups of varying abilities and ages.
  • Commitment to providing instruction and assistance to participants in a manner that consistently exhibits safety and proper paddling technique.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy kayaks repeatedly.
  • Ability to walk in sand and navigate uneven outdoor terrain.
  • Must be a competent swimmer.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in very hot and humid conditions for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and comfort driving a van with a trailer, including ability to hitch trailer to vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and lead groups of up to 15 people on guided kayaking programs.
  • Adhere to best safety practices, determining and adjusting tour routes based on real-time factors like tide, wind, and weather conditions.
  • Provide clear and engaging instruction on kayak fitting, entry, and exit.
  • Loading and unloading the kayak trailer before and after tours.
  • Cleaning and preparing kayaks, personal flotation devices (PFDs), and the van post-tour.
  • Performing basic maintenance on PFDs, the trailer, and other equipment.
