About The Position

The University of Chicago Graham School connects diverse audiences from around the world to the University’s distinctive ideas and intellectual community through events, courses, and degree programs. All instructors are employed at the discretion of the Dean of the Graham School, as advised by the Chair of the Basic Program and the Director of Academics. This is a part-time, benefits-eligible position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. The Instructor is free to teach sections over and above the amount required for this position, including summer teaching, and to receive appropriate compensation for those sections over and above their salary for the position.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for sixteen (16) course units during the academic year (Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters). At least 12 of these course units should be teaching sections, approximately 1.5 hours of classroom time, onsite or online, during regular program class hours. The other 4 course units can be either teaching sections or course development units. If an instructor uses course development units in one quarter, the expectation is that the course that results will be offered in the next available quarter, given administrative deadlines, that would mean not the following, but the next quarter. Two (2) course development units are the maximum per course developed.
  • Develops and teaches at least one new alumni or OTA course each year.
  • Performs teaching duties in a professional manner and communicates promptly and professionally with Program staff.
  • Attends monthly Basic Program Instructor staff meetings and participates in professional development activities such as online training, pedagogy workshops, and staff retreats.
  • Mentors new instructors and participates in professional development activities such as classroom observations.
  • Represents the Graham School at public events, including new student orientation, symposiums, and others.
  • Offers at least one First Friday lecture annually.
  • Participates in general course development and review processes.
  • Assists in curricular planning for events.
  • Works independently and guides work of groups of students and/or teachers throughout the academic year.
  • Interprets issues and provides expert consultation, training, and/or professional advising.
  • Participates in staff meetings and a range of social and academic program events.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
