About The Position

The K–4 Mathematics Specialist plays a central role in advancing a joyful, rigorous, and developmentally responsive mathematics program in the Lower School. This educator works at the intersection of student support and instructional leadership, partnering closely with classroom teachers to ensure that every child is both challenged and supported in their mathematical thinking and providing targeted small-group and individual instruction for students who need remediation as well as for those ready for deeper extension. Through careful use of assessment data and collaboration with teachers and learning specialists, the Math Specialist helps ensure that mathematics instruction meets students where they are while maintaining high expectations for conceptual understanding and problem-solving. This role is designed not only to strengthen mathematics teaching and learning in the present but also to contribute to the long-term coherence and growth of the program. As a pedagogical thought partner to faculty, the Math Specialist will model best practices in inquiry-based instruction, mathematical discourse, and differentiation. The Mathematics Specialist will also serve as the lead teacher for Kindergarten and First Grade computer science classes, introducing foundational computational thinking skills through developmentally appropriate instruction. Over time, this role is expected to expand into broader leadership of K–4 initiatives that integrate computational thinking, applied mathematics, and STEM learning, helping to cultivate authentic problem-solving experiences that connect mathematical reasoning to real-world design and innovation. The ideal candidate is a flexible teacher-leader who is equally comfortable working with a small group of struggling mathematicians as they are stretching advanced learners toward deeper abstraction and collaborating with teachers to ensure that the classroom experience meets a wide range of developmental needs and opportunities.
