About The Position

The K–12 ELL Teacher provides specialized instruction to students whose primary language is not English, helping them develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. This role supports students in accessing grade-level content, meeting state and district academic standards, and integrating successfully into the school community. The ELL Teacher also serves as a cultural liaison, supporting families and collaborating with school staff to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of English learners. The position reports to the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an English as a Second Language (NS) endorsement or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theories and ELL instructional strategies.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching English learners across multiple grade levels (K–12).
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Experience with WIDA standards and assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver research-based English language development instruction aligned to Michigan ELD Standards and district curriculum.
  • Provide targeted instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, both in pull-out and push-in settings.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to differentiate instruction and adapt materials for English learners.
  • Incorporate students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds into instruction to promote engagement and relevance.
  • Monitor and support students in meeting individual learning goals as outlined in their Language Assistance Program (LAP) plan.
  • Assess English language proficiency levels using state-approved assessments (e.g., WIDA ACCESS, WIDA Screener).
  • Track and document student progress toward English proficiency and academic achievement.
  • Provide timely feedback to students, families, and staff regarding student growth.
  • Prepare reports for state and district compliance requirements.
  • Serve as a resource for staff on strategies for working with English learners.
  • Communicate regularly with families, using translation/interpretation services when needed, to build trust and partnership.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and support staff to ensure students’ academic and social-emotional needs are met.
  • Support family engagement events and initiatives for English learner families.
  • Maintain accurate records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Participate in professional development related to language acquisition, culturally responsive practices, and instructional strategies.
  • Stay informed of current research and best practices in English learner education.
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and conducive to language learning.
