About The Position

To assist in leading a competitive basketball program that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, academic accountability, and personal growth. The assistant coach will support the head coachin in fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and school pride, while supporting student-athletes in reaching their full potential.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability to assist/support, organize, lead, and manage a comprehensive basketball program.
Prior successful coaching experience, preferably at the high school or higher level.
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, and techniques, with a commitment to continuous professional development and evolving best practices in the sport.
Serves as a positive role model for student-athletes through leadership, conduct, and mentorship on and off the court.
Recognize the influence athletics has on school and community identity and uphold a positive, inclusive, and respectful image of Weddington High School and Union County Public Schools.
Understand that coaching requires extended hours, travel, and inherent risks, and must be conducted with professionalism and care for student well-being.
Exhibit sound judgment, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all aspects of the role, even in areas not specifically covered by written policy.

Responsibilities

Uphold and enforce all UCPS, NCHSAA, and state policies, as well as conference and school-level regulations.
Communicate effectively with the athletic department, school administrators, student-athletes, and families.
Assist in scheduling, transportation logistics, facility usage, and game/event management.
Maintain current documentation for eligibility, physicals, parental consent, and academic status.
Collaborate with maintenance and custodial staff to ensure facility readiness and cleanliness.
Establish program philosophy and ensure consistency across all levels (varsity, JV, and feeder programs).
Recruit, develop, and evaluate assistant coaches. Promote professional development through clinics, conferences, and internal collaboration.
Foster a cohesive and supportive coaching staff culture.
Provide instruction on basketball fundamentals, advanced skills, and game strategy.
Monitor academic performance, behavior, and personal growth.
Promote character development, leadership, and core values such as respect, responsibility, and perseverance.
Implement training rules, conduct standards, and team expectations.
Support athletes with college recruitment and scholarship opportunities.
Ensure athlete safety through proper injury protocols and emergency procedures.
Collaborate with the head coach and athletic director on budget planning and purchasing.
Oversee inventory, distribution, care, and accountability of all team equipment and uniforms.
Maintain secure, clean, and organized locker rooms and equipment areas.
Support/assist preseason parent/player meetings and ongoing communication throughout the season.
Serve as the face of the program in the school and greater community.
Promote the program through school channels, media relations, and youth development initiatives.
Maintain positive relationships with boosters, officials, media, alumni, and community stakeholders.
