About The Position

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is looking for a Juvenile Rehabilitation Education and Career Specialist at Echo Glen Children's Center to cooperatively work within the campus therapeutic Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) treatment model. The specialist ensures services are developmentally appropriate, trauma informed, racial equity-based and culturally relevant. You will provide oversight and coordinate the provision of various services to young people in JR care. These jobs support residents while learning in the institutions and transitioning to the community by creating pathways for self-sufficiency through meaningful partnerships, education, employment, new opportunities, and resources. You will serve as a liaison between education service providers and Juvenile Rehabilitation leadership and staff. There are two job opportunities. One is a lead that provides instruction and guidance to Education and Career Specialists.

Requirements

  • Equivalent education and experience totaling six (6) years.
  • One year as a Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 2 (JRC2) or Juvenile Rehabilitation Community Counselor (JRCC) or Juvenile Rehabilitation Residential Counselor (JRRC).
  • Bachelor's degree, AND two (2) years of professional experience in casework, counseling, probation and parole, social services, planning, directing and/or facilitating youth group activities or experience in a related field.
  • A Master's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Social Sciences, or in a related field will substitute for one year of experience.

  • Basic juvenile correctional system, rehabilitation objectives in juvenile institutions, basic interviewing and counseling theories and techniques, basic concepts, fundamentals and principles of individual and group behaviors, introductory psychology of deviant behavior and crisis intervention methods and techniques.
  • Supervision and Lead techniques.
  • Report writing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement education-centered transition support services for all youth and meet with residents upon intake and exit to assess their educational and vocational needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of case files to determine the specific level and type of specialized treatment required to support education and career goals.
  • Coordinate education improvement initiatives and MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) implementation activities.
  • Assist students with High School and Beyond Plans, FAFSA, grant and scholarship applications and attend meeting with identified students.
  • Provide supervision, facilitation and/or guidance to residents in education and enrichment programs, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Monitor student behavior and adherence to class policies and procedures and address any issues that may arise.
  • Work closely with contracted trainers, presenters, teachers and staff to support resident success and ensure that residents have the resources they need to achieve their academic and career goals.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to student conduct and academic performance.
  • Maintain visual and/or audio contact with residents in classes and monitor their behavior for potential risks to themselves or others.
  • Respond to emergent situations such as fights, suicide attempts, and dis-regulated behavior using approved verbal de-escalation techniques and/or physical control techniques and restraints as necessary to restore order.
