About The Position

The Juvenile Court and Probation Office is responsible for ensuring that juveniles receive the necessary guidance, care, and control to promote their emotional, mental, and physical welfare. The office aims to protect society by focusing on rehabilitation rather than retributive punishment, applying appropriate sanctions based on the seriousness of offenses. Juvenile Officers are expected to utilize their training and judgment to make critical decisions regarding the needs of juveniles and their families with minimal supervision. The ultimate goal is to provide services and monitor compliance to prevent re-offending and help juveniles become productive members of society.

Requirements

  • Must possess a four-year degree in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Education, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a related field.
  • Must attend a forty-hour Juvenile Probation Course for certification.
  • Continuing education of twelve hours of training per year is required.
  • Must maintain a current valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for additional training in drug/substance abuse, mental health, and family issues.
  • Bilingual skills are an asset due to the increase of Hispanic families in the judicial system.

Responsibilities

  • Be on twenty-four hour call, seven days a week, responding to situations immediately and independently.
  • Interpret and comply with the Juvenile Code and other relevant laws, ensuring timely filing of petitions and court notifications.
  • Determine the need for and secure appropriate out-of-home placements for juveniles.
  • Supervise a caseload of 70 to 80 juveniles, ensuring proper services are provided.
  • Conduct routine meetings with juveniles, parents, school officials, and other agencies.
  • Monitor juveniles' school attendance, grades, and community service participation.
  • Issue arrest warrants or contempt for non-compliance and coordinate with the Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Conduct home studies and visit juveniles and families in their homes.
  • Take urine samples and analyze drug screens for juveniles and their parents.
  • Transport juveniles for various purposes, including evaluations and detention.
  • Maintain detailed case files and documentation for each juvenile.
  • Provide accurate testimony and written recommendations to the court.
  • Request hearings and ensure proper notification to involved parties.
  • Attend staff meetings and collaborate with other officers and agencies.
  • Teach classes to juveniles and attend training programs.
  • Perform clerical duties including data entry, filing, and correspondence.
  • Monitor payments of court costs, supervision fees, and other financial obligations.
