About The Position

The position involves supervising juveniles and providing security within the County's detention facilities. The role requires maintaining group control during various activities of detained juveniles, ensuring their safety, and preventing any escape attempts or violent behavior. The individual will conduct regular checks on residents, process new juveniles, and assist in their orientation regarding facility rules and policies. The position also involves crisis management, administering disciplinary actions, and maintaining accurate records of residents' behavior and activities.

Requirements

  • Must be age 21 or older.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate required.
  • Experience working with youths in a residential setting preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant fields preferred (psychology, sociology, education, criminal justice).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables.
  • Knowledge of department policy, rules, and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Family Code and juvenile justice system.
  • Good physical condition.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in recreation programs, volunteer capacity, or schools.
  • Certification as a Detention Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Courses in CPR and Emergency First Aid.
  • Approved restraint training.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and maintains group control during all activities of detained juveniles.
  • Prevents escapes, suicide attempts, and violent behavior.
  • Conducts regular visual checks on residents.
  • Processes new juveniles according to departmental rules.
  • Screens referred juveniles and makes decisions regarding their detention or release.
  • Observes residents to analyze their needs.
  • Assists residents in developing a positive attitude through counseling.
  • Confronts crisis situations calmly and professionally.
  • Administers disciplinary action fairly and consistently.
  • Reports unusual behavior to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains current records/files on residents.
  • Participates in group meetings at the beginning of shifts.
  • Performs room searches to control contraband.
  • Logs incoming and outgoing telephone calls.
  • Oversees visitors to the facility.
  • Provides parents with information regarding residents' behavior.
  • Analyzes and evaluates facility procedures for improvements.
  • Organizes and implements new activities for residents.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the detention facility.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as needed.
  • Transports and serves meals following food handling practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Base pay of $18.23 hourly.
