About The Position

The Juvenile Detention Officer I position involves supervisory responsibilities for residents at the Neaves Davis Center for Children. The officer is tasked with overseeing daily activities, maintaining order, and ensuring proper documentation of resident behavior and incidents. This role requires effective communication and the ability to manage disciplinary issues, as well as the flexibility to work various shifts, including overnight shifts.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Some experience in a correctional or institutional environment.
  • Knowledge of sociology and child psychology as applied to delinquents.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement and security measures.
  • Ability to gain the confidence of socially maladjusted children and establish effective working relations with parents and guardians.
  • Ability to plan and supervise children's activities.

  • Knowledge of institutional maintenance and upkeep.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all activities of the residents at the center, including meals, rest periods, personal cleanliness, recreational periods, and school activities.
  • Maintains order and addresses disciplinary problems as required.
  • Prepares observation, incident, and behavior reports, ensuring all information in the daily logbook is accurate and legible.
  • Transports juveniles to and from scheduled appointments such as court hearings and medical visits.
  • Provides crisis counseling to calm volatile situations when necessary.
  • May be required to work overnight shifts and must be able to work 3rd shift if needed.
