About The Position

The Juvenile Detention Deputy position is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the County juvenile detention center. This role involves monitoring the activities of staff and inmates, processing new inmates, maintaining facility security, and responding to emergencies. The position requires adherence to stringent state and county legal guidelines and may involve on-call or part-time work with 24-hour availability.

Requirements

  • Ability to work under general direction with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security protocols in a detention facility.
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with staff and inmates.
  • Ability to handle potentially dangerous situations with appropriate restraint methods.
  • Familiarity with legal guidelines and procedures related to juvenile detention.

  • Experience in law enforcement or corrections.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Crisis intervention training.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the activities of staff and inmates to ensure safety and security.
  • Communicate effectively with other employees via various forms of communication.
  • Process new inmates into the juvenile detention center, including documentation and data entry.
  • Perform release duties, ensuring proper disposition of inmates.
  • Maintain facility security by patrolling secure areas and monitoring electronic systems.
  • Monitor fire alarm emergency panels and advise Detention Deputies of emergencies.
  • Issue keys to staff and maintain key control inventory.
  • Search for and seize weapons, drugs, and contraband.
  • Handle and secure evidence according to proper procedures.
  • Ensure safety and security during emergencies and evacuations.
  • Monitor inmate behavior in various situations including education and recreation.
  • Respond to back-up calls to control violent inmates using proper restraint methods.
  • Perform daily census counts to account for inmates.
  • Assist in the distribution of medications and mail.
  • Perform perimeter security checks.
  • Supervise inmate hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Respond to inmate medical assistance requests following policies.
  • Maintain logs, records, and documentation.
  • Investigate incidents and prepare reports for court.
  • Coordinate inmate scheduling for various appointments and hearings.
  • Transport and escort inmates to court and medical appointments.
  • Serve inmate meals and assist in their distribution.
  • Determine if inmates require medical assistance and obtain it when needed.
