About The Position

This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as a critical resource for prosecutors, law enforcement, and allied professionals across North Carolina, enhancing the capability of the State’s prosecutors to effectively prosecute juvenile cases.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school and an active North Carolina law license.
  • Extensive understanding of federal, state, and constitutional law, especially regarding juvenile court cases.
  • Familiarity with the NC General Statutes, rules of evidence, and the NC court system.
  • Proficiency in legal research, strategic case analysis, and complex adjudication preparation.
  • Skilled in interpreting complex criminal laws and applying them to cases in real time.
  • Ability to work well with other attorneys, law enforcement, and criminal justice partners.
  • Effective in both oral and written communication and comfortable representing cases in court.
  • This position requires frequent travel across North Carolina to assist prosecutors in various districts, making adaptability and independence essential.
  • Knowledge of: North Carolina statutes, common law, and case law; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; case, statutory, and common law; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools; the operations of the NC court system; and ethical and professional standards of conduct.
  • Skill in: interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of case facts; researching and identifying precedents in case law; utilizing electronic legal research and online systems; organizing work; setting priorities; meeting critical deadlines; and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Ability to: analyze facts and apply applicable law to those facts; conduct legal research; plan, develop, and execute an effective litigation strategy to achieve desired results; prepare, organize, and conduct witness examinations; deliver opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections; express complex legal concepts and related facts in a clear and concise manner; argue clearly, logically, and persuasively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process; recognize and solve problems; produce legal interpretations in a quick and responsive manner for court officials; write reports, motions, briefs, and other legal documents; deal tactfully with sensitive situations; communicate both orally and in writing; and work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted resource to prosecutors, law enforcement, social workers, medical professionals, mental health professionals, and other juvenile justice professionals in the State on juvenile prosecution.
  • Provide expert legal advice and technical assistance on juvenile cases to prosecutors across the state.
  • Serve as lead or associate counsel, preparing and presenting cases in court, and representing the state in juvenile cases as assigned.
  • Support pre-adjudication investigations, including evidence gathering and strategic case development.
  • Prepare articles, legal memoranda, and other resources for statewide distribution on current juvenile legal issues.
  • Assess training needs, design tailored programs, and deliver high-impact training to prosecutors, law enforcement, and allied professionals.
  • Offer legal research, charging guidance, and support for pre-adjudication, and appellate strategies related to juvenile cases.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the social workers, medical professionals, mental health professionals, and other juvenile justice professionals.
  • Prepare and publish articles for our statewide magazine, sharing best practices and emerging issues with your peers.
  • Stay on the cutting edge of evidence-gathering techniques and emerging technologies to support law enforcement and prosecutors in the courtroom.
  • Develop and maintain a rapport with the NC Department of Public Safety, the Office of the Juvenile Defender, Law Enforcement Agencies, the NC Attorney General's office, and other juvenile justice organizations on issues related to juvenile prosecution cases.
