Position Summary The Junior Device Technician will be hired with an expectation that upon employment, the trainee will enroll in and complete a comprehensive formal training program in the field of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) offered by a professional training school (e.g. the Arrhythmia Technologies Institute’s Certificate program in cardiac device technology). The employee must successfully complete the six-month didactic preparatory course, which is interspersed with clinical practice and hands-on skill laboratories. Portions of the coursework and six months of hands-on work will be performed at Valley prior to advancing to the role of Junior Device Technician. The cost of the program will be covered by The Valley Health System. After one successful year in the role of a junior device technician, the employee will be qualified to be promoted out of the trainee roll. Education & Certification Requirements High school diploma required. Completion of a recognized course in cardiac arrhythmia interpretation. CPR certification must be maintained. Experience Minimum of 2 years of experience in cardiac arrhythmia interpretation. Telemetry Tech experience preferred. Skills & Competencies During the training period the Junior Device Technician should be able to perform the following: Demonstrate basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Proficient in performing and interpreting 12-lead ECGs and interpreting ambulatory ECG monitors. Competent in reviewing operative reports to accurately identify diagnosis, device type, manufacturer details, device settings, and follow-up. Provide basic patient education on home monitoring setup, transmission procedures, and troubleshooting common issues (e.g., monitor connectivity). Communicate effectively with patients regarding appointment reminders, transmission issues, and follow-up scheduling. Skilled with in-office and remote monitoring of loop recorders. Performs ILR checks including device setting, battery life, and rhythm abnormalities. Adjusts ILR settings under the direction of a physician or APN to optimize device performance. Observe in-clinic device interrogations while noting results and clinical findings. Gain foundational knowledge of pacing modes, lead configurations, arrythmia detection, and device diagnostics. Complete assigned manufacturer training modules (Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Abbott, Biotronik) as part of onboarding. Follow HIPAA and clinical privacy guidelines for handling patient device data. Upon completion of the course and 6 months of training the Junior Device Technician should be able to perform the following: Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, physiology, cardiac rhythm management (CRM), electrophysiology (EP), and structural heart therapies. Independently perform in-office and remote device interrogations for all major manufacturers (Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott, and Biotronik). Analyze and interpret device diagnostics, arrhythmia episodes, lead measurements, battery longevity, and system integrity. Perform wound evaluations to assess healing and identify potential complications post CIED implantation. Reprogram device parameters under the direction of electrophysiologists to optimize pacing, sensing, and therapeutic performance. Educate patients and families on device management, precautions, and follow-up care. Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with healthcare regulations. Additional duties may include telephone triage, reviewing medical history, recording vital signs, and the ability to communicate critical events or findings to physicians directly. Troubleshoot remote monitoring and device-related issues promptly, ensuring timely resolution. Demonstrates proficiency in identifying critical cardiac rhythms and interpreting EKGs to determine appropriate escalation based on alert criteria. Schedule device interrogation appointments correctly based on global periods to support safe device follow up care. Ensure all charges are entered accurately daily to include correct diagnoses codes. Meet quality and performance standards. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
