SMX is seeking a Junior Data Scientist who will support the analysis, management, and provide reports and metrics concerning Naval aviation critical parts in the Joint Deficiency Reporting System – Critical Item Management (JDRS-CIM) database. NAVAIR’s Critical Item Management (CIM) is the process of identifying and managing parts critical to aviation safety, ensuring only approved parts are used, and preventing their failure or misuse to avoid catastrophic events, injuries, or fatalities. This management is guided by DoD and Navy regulations and implements a life-cycle approach that includes establishing item criticality, approving sources of supply and repair, and tracking critical items throughout their use in Navy and Marine Corps aviation systems. A Critical Safety Item (CSI) is defined by its potential to cause a catastrophic or critical failure resulting in loss or serious damage to an aircraft or weapons systems, an unacceptable risk of personal injury or loss of life, or an uncommanded engine shutdown. The Critical Item Management (CIM) Team is responsible for managing Critical Safety Item data in the Joint Deficiency Reporting System (JDRS)-CIM information system which is used by NAVAIR, Navy Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP), Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Defense Contracts Management Agency (DCMA), and the other services to identify naval aviation Critical Safety Items (CSIs), approved manufacturers, and critical characteristics.
