About The Position

SANDRA AND LEON LEVINE JCC The Sandra and Leon Levine Jewish Community Center is a non-profit, social service agency founded upon Jewish ethics and values. The Center provides and initiates diversified social, educational, recreational and cultural programs within a Jewish setting. The JCC is a partner in serving the community, is affiliated with the JCC Association of North America and a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. POSITION PURPOSE: The Junior Counselor is responsible for providing for the social, emotional and educational needs of each camper and the group as a whole during the camp season. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the supervision of the CIT/CA Head Counselors, Junior Counselors are responsible for assisting in the planning, conducting, and supervising of a variety of recreational activities for campers in Kindergarten through 5th grade in a day camp setting, as well as assisting in the care and supervision of the campers assigned to their group.

Requirements

  • Entering 10th Grade by August
  • Successful completion of the Camp Mindy CIT program preferred
  • Camping and/or leadership experience
  • Good character and integrity
  • Positive physical and mental health
  • The desire to work with children in a day-camp setting
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patience
  • Ability to take guidance and supervision
  • Activity skills and the ability to transmit/teach skills to campers
  • Ability to relate to other counselors and children
  • Effective communication, decision-making skills

Responsibilities

  • Be punctual, attend and actively participate in ALL camp activities as well as training sessions and activities.
  • Attend ALL the required sessions of orientation prior to the first day of Camp.
  • Abide by ALL camp rules, policies and procedures.
  • Assist in planning and running group activities with Junior and Senior Counselors.
  • Provide Positive support to all campers during all camp activities.
  • Help secure and set up/breakdown supplies and equipment before and after camp activities.
  • Assist campers and staff in the transitions from activity to activity to reach each location safely.
  • Consistently displaying a positive attitude around campers and staff when engaging in camp activities.
  • Report any problems or issues to Camp Mindy Staff.
  • Preference will be given to those who successfully completed the Counselor in Training program.
