About The Position

The Jr. Summer Camp Counselor provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal summer camp. The incumbent will create positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Requirements

  • State requires all prospective employees to submit the following:
  • FBI Clearance (Department of Human Services),
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance,
  • PA State Police Clearance,
  • National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR) Certificate,
  • Health Assessment with TB screening,
  • Minimum age of 16; with at least an 8th grade education.
  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting.
  • CPR/Pediatric First Aid/AED Certification required within 30 days of employment by PQAS certified trainer; required.
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of different ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, and generational backgrounds.
  • ALL CHILDCARE POSITIONS REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING CLEARANCES FOR EMPLOYMENT PRIOR TO THE DATE OF HIRE.
  • PA CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK
  • PA CHILD ABUSE HISTORY CERTIFICATION
  • FBI (DHS) FINGERPRINTING HISTORY CLEARANCE
  • NSOR CLEARANCE(National Sex Offender Registry)
  • VERIFICATION OF 2,500 HOURS WORKING WITH CHILDREN
  • 2 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
  • STAFF HEALTH ASSESSMENT FOR, INCLUDING TB TESTING
  • MANDATED REPORTER CERTIFICATION TRAININGA

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group of children.
  • Assist in providing a quality program, taking into consideration the needs of each child and the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
  • Assist in the development, writing, and implementation of weekly lesson plans that include the environment, movement, games, arts/crafts, science, field trips, guest speakers and special events.
  • Assist in planning and implementing program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Maintain program areas and adheres to program standards in regards to equipment, storage, safety and cleanliness.
  • Cultivate positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
  • Ensure the safety and health of all campers through proper supervision at all times. Actively participate with all children.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times according to the YMCA Code of Conduct.
  • Assist in implementing the YMCA Safety Around Water Program.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
