About The Position

The Judicial Courtroom Assistant I/II position involves assisting judicial officers in a courtroom setting by maintaining accurate records of court proceedings, controlling court calendars, and scheduling hearings. The role requires acting as a liaison between judicial officers, legal counsel, court staff, and the public, addressing procedural questions and courtroom issues as they arise. The position may involve working in various types of courtrooms handling civil, criminal, family law, probate, or juvenile cases. Incumbents are expected to perform specialized courtroom support functions with a thorough knowledge of legal terminology and procedures, exercising discretion and accountability in their responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Educational equivalent to a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Judicial Courtroom Assistant I: 1 year as a Court Services Specialist I/II or 3 years of administrative, clerical, or secretarial experience.
  • Judicial Courtroom Assistant II: 1 year experience as a Judicial Courtroom Assistant I or 3 years of experience as a Court Services Specialist I/II or 4 years of administrative, clerical, or secretarial experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

  • Experience dealing with legal or court processes.
  • Knowledge of procedures and terminology used in Superior Court legal processing.

Responsibilities

  • Attend court sessions and maintain official records of court proceedings.
  • Take rough minutes and administer oaths to witnesses, interpreters, jurors, and others as required.
  • Prepare, assemble, process, and maintain reports, logs, forms, and official documents generated from court proceedings.
  • Enter data into computer systems to record court proceedings and generate documents.
  • Act as a liaison between judges, attorneys, agencies, and the public.
  • Maintain assigned courtroom calendar and coordinate court scheduling.
  • Track cases submitted to the court and monitor filing dates.
  • Assist judges in the jury selection process and maintain jury records.
  • Maintain control of and act as custodian of exhibits during trials/hearings.
  • Review orders, filings, judgments, and other documents for accuracy.
  • Calculate, collect, record, and report bails, fees, fines, and other monies received in court.
  • Maintain orderly appearance of courtroom and assigned work areas.

Benefits

  • Regular full-time employment.
  • Hourly pay range for Level I: $24.42 - $29.82.
  • Hourly pay range for Level II: $27.80 - $33.94.
