This position is responsible for handling complex technical and legal clerical work that requires specialized knowledge of the court system. The role must follow legal and judicial ethical standards, including strict confidentiality of all proceedings. The employee provides both secretarial and technical support to a judge. This work requires strong skills and familiarity with legal terminology, procedures, and practices. Employees are expected to use good judgment, solve problems independently, and make most day-to-day decisions based on precedent, experience, and an understanding of the judge’s preferences. General supervision is provided by the elected Judge of the branch and the elected Clerk of Court. Work is evaluated mainly through compliance with department procedures, direct observation, and the quality of completed tasks. Examples of Work Performed: The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Maintains complex electronic court calendar involving scheduling court hearings and trials.
  • Responsible for maintaining and managing complex electronic court files.
  • Performs data entry and case management functions relating to court proceedings or related office functions using automated network system (CCAP).
  • Hold pretrial conferences and scheduling conferences, meeting with attorneys to establish deadlines for various events/actions preceding trials and hearings.
  • Prepares a variety of correspondence, memoranda, jury instructions, and legal documents for Circuit Court Judge.
  • Explains policies and procedures, and other information regarding the work of the court to legal professionals, administrative agencies, and the general public.
  • May attend meetings; keeps and transcribes minutes.
  • Participates in establishing professional development goals that are supportive of broader County goals.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works extra hours as required.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • High school graduation or equivalent and at least 2 years of legal experience.
  • Other combinations of education and experience that provide necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
