Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services

Excelacom is seeking an ambitious and creative Entry-Level Generative AI Engineer to join our team in Reston, VA. In this role, you will work on cutting-edge generative models such as Large Language Models (LLMs), text-to-image systems, and AI agents. You'll be part of a fast-paced AI team building prototypes and real-world applications using state-of-the-art generative technologies. This is a foundational opportunity to grow into a top-tier AI engineer. You will be expected to contribute to the development of recommendations, business knowledge and technology awareness, provide meaningful input into client deliverables/proposals, and take ownership of assigned tasks. You will conduct research, collect data, and perform quantitative and qualitative analyses to support business solutions.

  • Assist in training, fine-tuning, and evaluating transformer-based generative models (e.g., GPT, T5, LLaMA).
  • Implement prompt engineering techniques to optimize LLM responses for specific tasks (e.g., summarization, content generation, dialogue).
  • Build prototype applications that leverage generative AI (text generation, chatbot agents, document Q&A, text-to-image).
  • Explore and integrate tools like LangChain, LLM orchestration frameworks, and vector databases.
  • Conduct benchmark tests comparing model outputs using various zero-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuned strategies.
  • Collaborate with AI research and product teams to translate ideas into working proof-of-concepts.
  • Learn and apply ethical and responsible AI practices, especially around model safety, hallucinations, and bias mitigation.
  • Contribute to Excelacom's Center of Excellence and intermittently work on Excelacom proposals to the client.
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience (including internships or academic research) in machine learning, NLP, or AI model development.
  • Understanding of transformer architecture and attention mechanisms.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, with experience in PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.
  • Hands-on use of generative model APIs (OpenAI, Cohere, Hugging Face, Stability AI, etc.).
  • Familiarity with LLM pipelines, prompt tuning, and model evaluation metrics (BLEU, ROUGE, perplexity).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Strong math, written and verbal communication skills with an analytical approach.
  • Ability to interact cross-functionally with various levels of management and peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Prior experience in Telecommunications, Media, or Cable is highly preferred.
  • Experience in a professional office environment.
  • Relevant internship experience.
  • Basic understanding of SQL.
  • Exposure to prompt chaining, agents, or LLM workflows (LangChain, Semantic Kernel).
  • Experience working with open-source LLMs (e.g., Mistral, Phi, Falcon).
  • Knowledge of tokenization, embeddings, and use of vector search (e.g., FAISS, Pinecone).
  • Participation in AI competitions, open-source projects, or published AI research/blogs.
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance.
  • Ancillary benefits.
  • Life and AD&D insurance.
  • 401k.
  • Generous paid time off policies.
